Local general elections will take place on June 3. The Parliament approved a decision in this respect at the Friday’s sitting, March 23. The draft law was proposed by the MPs Eugenia Ostapciuc, Vlad Cubreacov, Serafim Urecheanu, Vlad Filat and Iurie Rosca. Several parties announced their willingness to participate in the elections. Particular attention is paid to the elections for the office of General Mayor of Chisinau. Several parties already announced their candidates for the office of Chisinau Mayor. Liberal Party will propose Dorin Chirtoaca, Democrat Party – Vlad Filat, Social-Democrat Party – Eduard Musuc. The Coordinating Council of the Chisinau Organisation of the National Liberal Party fielded the candidacy of Vitalia Pavlicenco. Also, chairman of the Association “Casa noastra Chisinau” (“Our home Chisinau”) Oleg Oniscenco announced he might run for mayor. At the same time, several politicians announced that they do not exclude the participation in elections in Chisinau. Among them are the municipal councillor Mihai Roscovan and the leader of Social Democracy Party Dumitru Braghis. Leader of “Moldova Noastra” Alliance Serafim Urecheanu said that he will run for this office only if he will have as opponents Vasile Tarlev or President Vladimir Voronin. According to unconfirmed information, the Communist Party could propose the interim mayor of Chisinau Veaceslav Iordan. Also, several sources say that the People’s Christian Democrat Party could field Alexandru Corduneanu, deputy-mayor of Chisinau. The last general elections took place on May 25, 2003.
