Homeless dogs, carcasses consumers, present an enormous danger in eventual apparition of bird flu, the head of the Municipal Health, Victor Savin, said at the operative meeting of the mayoralty, asking the local administration to take tough measures regarding these.
According to Savin, local public authorities have to take urgently measures with those dozens of thousands of homeless noted now in the capital, if the case of apparition of bird flu, the dogs will be the one that would eat the dead bodies and become the active bearers of the virus. Moreover, Savin mentioned, as the dogs have no immunity.
Interim mayor of the Municipal Centre of Preventive Medicine, Ion Cibotaru, also showed very concerned of the increased number of homeless dogs and the danger that they represent not only at the appearance of bird flu, but being bearers of many serious diseases. Cibotaru said that recently the scientist of Moldova the increasing danger regarding the situation created by homeless dogs.
The topic of homeless dogs was discussed conversely last months, especially when a German citizen founded an asylum on his own money in a village of Moldova. The subject was re-discussed in connection with the researches of the scientists, which confirm the fact that the virus of bird flu, in changed way, can be contracted by dogs and other animals, as a result humans also can be infected. The opinions of the public authorities and civil society differ regarding protection measures, some of them proposing physic liquidation of unsupervised dogs, and others proposed to sterilise them and to create special asylums for them.
At the moment, there are noted about 50,000 homeless dogs in municipality Chisinau, according to official data.
