The financial situation and the living standards of former political prisoners and survivors of Soviet repressions need to be improved through increased government assistance. The subject was discussed by Prime Minister Dorin Recean during a meeting with a group of members of the “Association of Romanians from Bessarabia - former political prisoners and deportees”.

“We need to review the lists of those who benefit from financial support and facilities so that we can intervene to improve things. There are people who have suffered and we have to take care of them”, said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The interlocutors addressed the topic of increasing national consciousness by introducing patriotic education into the school curriculum, by inaugurating a museum of remembrance and organizing actions to commemorate the victims of repression. The members of the Association appreciated the exhibition “Bessarabians in the Gulag” held in the Grand National Assembly Square in memory of the victims of the Soviet deportations. The exhibition is running until July 30. The guides explain to the visitors what was the context, the extent, but also the short, medium and long term consequences of the Stalinist deportations.

In Moldova there are over 6,000 political prisoners and survivors of the Soviet repressions.
