A girl of almost three from Chisinau was rushed to the Municipal Children’s Hospital “Valentin Ignatenco” in Chisinau in a serious state after a TV set fell on her. The hospital’s director Nicolae Starciuc has told IPN that the child suffered an arm fracture and closed brain injury that may have long-term repercussions.
According to the doctor, the parents were at work and the child was in the care of the grandmother. When left without supervision for a wile, the girl pulled the desk with wheels and the TV set fell on her. She is now in the neurosurgery section, where she will stay for about a week, and will then continue the treatment at home.
Nicolae Starciuc said such cases take place almost every week because the parents leave the children without supervision and do not remove the pieces of furniture or the decorations that can become dangerous for the little ones. He recommends installing stable furniture that cannot be moved by the kids and taking measures to prevent the children being involved in home accidents.
Last year, a child of only one year and two months died crushed by the nightstand and the TV set.
According to the National Health Management Center, 2,900 children under five suffered injuries in Moldova last year. Sixty of them died. A study carried out within the REPEMOL Project “Regionalization of the Paediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Services in Moldova”, 66% of the parents are aware of the risk of their children being hurt at home.
