The National Library is hosting a documentary exhibition to celebrate the 80th of the renowned literary critic and former president of the Moldovan Writers’ Union Mihai Cimpoi.
“Visitors to the exhibition will get to know (…) Mihai Cimpoi in his capacity as editor, Eminescu scholar, academician, man of letters and outstanding intellectual”, National Library director Elena Pintilei told IPN.
The exhibition is compartmented into Mihai Cimpoi’s personal life and work; Mihai Cimpoi as an editor, author, literary critic and translator; and Mihai Cimpoi as an outstanding scholar of Mihai Eminescu’s work.
The exhibition will run until September 15 in the central building of the National Library. Admission is free.
Mihai Cimpoi was born on 3 September 1942 in Larga, Hotin county. After graduating from the Chisinau Philology Faculty (1965), he becomes an editor for the Nistru Magazine (until 1972). In 1987 Cimpoi is elected secretary of the Moldovan Writer’s Union and then its president (1991-2010). During the Gorbachev Thaw, he becomes member of Soviet Moldavia’s legislature (1989-1990) and subsequently an MP in independent Moldova (1999-2001). In 1991, Cimpoi becomes honorary member of the Romanian Academy and a year later titular member of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences.
