The average life expectancy in Moldova was 71.4 years in 2022, increasing by 2.4 years compared to the previous year and by 1.5 years compared to 2020. Disaggregated by sex, life expectancy at birth was 67.1 years for men and 75.7 years for women, increasing by 2 years and 2.8 years, respectively, on the previous year.
According to the National Statistics Bureau, the higher life expectancy is largely due to a reduction in the overall death rate for both men and women.
The general mortality rate was 14.2 deaths per 1,000 population last year. Meanwhile, the infant mortality rate increased slightly, from 8.5 deaths under one year old per 1,000 live births in 2021 to 9 deaths under one year old per 1,000 live births in the year 2022.
There is a significant gender disparity in life expectancy at birth, with women living an average of 8.6 years longer than men. The average life expectancy of the female population is higher in all age groups than the average life expectancy of the male population at the same ages.
