The diminishing in the last 10 years of the infantile death rate and of the death rate of persons able to work influenced the life expectancy indexes in Moldova, registering an increase of 2.1 years in 2005 compared with 1995. Despite these figures, the average life expectancy in Moldova remains the lowest in Europe, and the cause of the high rates of death are poverty and low quality of social services.
According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, this index has insignificantly decreased compared with 2004 – from 68.4 up to 67.9. These data show that women have a higher life expectancy, by 7.9 more than men, fact which is due to the high premature rate of death among them.
The average life expectancy of the urban inhabitants is higher compared with those living in rural regions – by 3.7 more at men and by 3.4 at women.
The significant increase of the death rate at the beginning of 90s determined the decrease of the average life length. The smallest level of this index was registered in 1995 – 65.8 years, including men – 61.8 years, women – 69.7 years.
The average life expectancy in EU member countries constitutes 79.06 years.
