Libraries should be regarded as institutions that support the sustainable development of communities. In  2019, all the libraries in Moldova will combine forces to become community centers and areas where the citizens come to access information and to correctly inform themselves. The priorities in the field of bibliotechonomy were set at the annual forum of managers of the national system of libraries that took place at the National Library in Chisinau, IPN reports.

Eugenia Bejan, scientific secretary of the National Bibliotechonomy Council, said the new view on national libraries was defined in the new law on libraries that will take effect next February. The library will not only ensure access to books and documents, but will also help the community members to develop by informal training activities and by modern and innovative services.

According to Eugenia Bejan, it is not enough to define the new view by law and regulations. The community of libraries should share this view and this is important. “We should do our best for the message of the law, its advantages for each person to reach each community member,” she stated.

Doctor Habilitate Neli Ţurcan, of the Communication and Information Theory Department of the State University of Moldova, said the support for continuous professional formation is a key element in the development and activity of libraries. The image of a library depends not only on the activities this stages, but also on the personnel that should be one step ahead of the requests and requirements of users. There are not many young people who want to study bibliotechonomy and the specialty faculty was closed.

Vera Osoianu, who is in charge of research and development in bibliotechonomy at the National Library, said the role of libraries is to teach the users who come to the library. “They now speak a lot about the post-truth era. The online environment is full of false information and the librarians’ role is to help the population to avoid false information,” stated Vera Osoianu.

In Moldova there are over 2,700 libraries.
