The Liberal MPs will not vote in favor of setting the date of the presidential elections in the March 1 sitting of Parliament either, if the issue is put to the vote, the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu said Wednesday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. ”We do not know Missis Veronica Bacalu and thus can neither approve nor reject this candidate. We must talk to her first as we do not elect the governor of the National Bank or a commission head. Missis Bacalu must know very well Moldova’s external relations. She will be the supreme commander if she is elected. She must know all the obligations of a President,” said Mihai Ghimpu, adding that they want no guarantees from Veronica Bacalu, as some analysts stated. A week ago, the Liberals left the sitting of Parliament when Speaker Marian Lupu proposed including a draft decision on the fixing of the date of the presidential elections in the agenda. The Liberal lawmakers insist that a consensus should be first reached as regards the candidate and then the date of the elections can be set. Veronica Bacalu was fielded for the presidency by the Liberal Democratic Party and the Democratic Party. Marian Lupu said that if the date of the presidential elections is not fixed in the near future, he will ask the Constitutional Court to pronounce on the opportunity of dissolving Parliament. Mihai Ghimpu is convinced that if such circumstances had existed, the Communist Party would have made use of them long ago.
