MPs and members of the Liberal Party on May 18 staged a protest in front of the Presidential Office against President Igor Dodon’ actions aimed at associating Moldova with the Eurasian Union, IPN reports.

The party said the protest was mounted to show dissatisfaction with the decision to offer Moldova the status of observer at the Eurasian Union that was taken in a meeting of Igor Dodon, Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of Belarus Alexandr Lukashenko and Kazak President Nursultan Nazarbayev on May 14.

In the protest, the Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said Moldova’s road goes to the European Union, not to the Eurasian Union. “We have the Association Agreement with the European Union and obtained a market for Moldova’s exports and free travel for the citizens. We condemn the actions and say: Down with the non-President Dodon,” he stated.

According to Liberal MP Roman Botan, Igor Dodon committed a serious crime against the people when he arbitrarily imposed his own view on Moldova and made all the approaches to orient it to the Eurasian Union that is patronized by Russia. Igor Dodon is not supported by Parliament in these acts and he thus became a usurper of state power.

Presidential adviser Maxim Lebedinski came out to talk to the protesters. He said the citizens have the right to express their opinion. The Eurasian Union is an economic union that works based on democratic principles and Moldova has the status of observer at this union, but Moldovans’ rights are no way affected and this status will bring only benefits to Moldova’s economy and its wellbeing.
