The Liberal Party put forward a bill on Moldova’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Bill author Valeriu Munteanu confirmed for IPN that the bill was registered.
Under the bill, Moldova will denounce the agreement on the constitution of the CIS because the principles based on which it was created – respect for the national sovereignty, equality of rights, non-interference in internal affairs, and non-use of force – were violated by one of the signatories.
The Liberal Party says that not all the former members of the USSR joined the CIS. Some of them – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania - chose to become part of the European community, while others renounced the membership following military aggression on the part of a founding member (Georgia left the CIS in 2008). The authors make reference to the events in Ukraine, saying one of the Parties occupied the sovereign territory of another Party and then annexed it, while the other member states were apathetic, showing the inefficiency and uselessness of this agreement.
According to the informative note, given that Russia does not obey the provisions of the international agreements signed by it and that Moldova aspires to become an EU member, it is now opportune to denounce the agreement on the constitution of the CIS. Mutually beneficial economic relations can be further promoted through other existing agreements and through new bilateral treaties.
