The Liberal Party (PL) issued a press statement following the arrest of Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Iurie Chirinciuc, whom it has supported politically. The party says it became inconvenient on the political arena of Moldova and attempts are thus being made to callously remove it from government by dirty and base games, IPN reports.

According to the PL, the arrest of the minister was made for the sole purpose of manipulating the public opinion, using the media, which published and disseminated denigrating and absolutely erroneous information about the reasons for the arrest.

The Liberal Party notes the press release issued by the National Anticorruption Center says that Iurie Chirinciuc, in collusion with other persons, exerted pressure on a company that won a tender contest to implement a project funded by the European Investment Bank with the aim of making it concede a part of the workload to affiliated business entities. In reality, the official indictment is different and has no connection with the circumstances stated in the Center’s press release, which was later disseminated by media outlets.

In support of its position, the PL states that before the arrest, Iurie Chirinciuc was familiarized with the ordinance to investigate him as a suspect of February 6, 2017. The minster is accused of applying an illegal scheme to gain advantages and earn money in concert with and as a result of a preliminary agreement with unidentified persons.

“Given the text of the mentioned ordinance, we ascertain that the accusations made against the minister have nothing to do with the circumstances invoked by the NAC in the press release that was published on the official website www.cna.md and that was then issued to the press. Moreover, the content of the given ordinance shows the prosecution body cannot clearly say what serious consequences were witnessed following the pretended actions imputed to the minister,” said the PL.

Iurie Chirinciuc was arrested on April 27 following searches carried out in his office, car and home.
