Members of the Liberal parliamentary group announced they initiated the procedure for suspending President Igor Dodon from post. For now the initiative has been signed by the Liberal MPs only, but the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu is confident that they will garner the 34 signatures needed for the bill to be registered with the Parliament’s secretariat. The politician called on all the parliamentary groups to support this initiative, IPN reports.
In a news conference, Mihai Ghimpu said there are a number of reasons why they decided to initiate this procedure, but the fact that Igor Dodon congratulated the so-called “president of Transnistria” in Tighina town is the most serious of these.
“Igor Dodon violated the Constitution when he congratulated the so-called “president of Transnistria”. By this congratulatory message, he showed that he safeguards the interests of another state than the Republic of Moldova. We will not allow a person who promotes the interests of the Russian Federation to serve as Head of State. When he took an oath, he swore for the integrity of the Republic of Moldova. So far nobody congratulated and nobody recognized a self-styled president of the Transnistrian region, not even the Russian Federation,” stated the Liberal leader.
Asked if he discussed this initiative with the colleagues from the parliamentary alliance, Mihai Ghimpu answered negatively. “We are an independent group and have the right to any legislative initiative. I hope we will enjoy support, even if I have some doubts. Some of my colleagues can say that not much time passed since the investiture and that some of the statements were made before he officially became President. It should be clear: we do not intend to take decisions according to the wishes of our alliance colleagues,” he said.
If the initiative is registered, this will be debated in Parliament. If it secures the necessary numbers of votes, a referendum on the dismissal of the President will be held.
In connection with the Liberals’ initiative, the Democratic Party (PDM) issued a press release, saying the Liberal Party should first present in detail the arguments on which this initiative is based at the coalition’s meeting. “If there are elements that induce the risk of a possible violation of the basic law, the PDM could request the Constitutional Court to pronounce on the possible violation of the Constitution, as the law provides in such situations. Depending on the answer of the Constitutional Court, we will decide what actions to take further together with our coalition colleagues,” it is said in the press release.
