The Liberal group in Parliament today has been formally renamed to the Liberal-Reformist group. While Liberal-Reformist Anatolie Arhire welcomed the decision, saying it received a majority of 7 votes from the former group's 12 members, Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu complained it was adopted in breach of the Parliament's regulations, IPN reports.
Ion Creanga, the head of Parliament's legal committee, told the lawmakers at today's session that the parliamentary groups don't belong to parties, but to MPs and they work according to their own bylaws, thus such a renaming was legitimate.
However, Mihai Ghimpu begged to differ, arguing that the Parliament's regulations state that MPs form parliamentary groups based on a party's ticket, thus groups belong to parties rather than to MPs.
Last April, 7 Liberal MPs announced they were leaving Mihai Ghimpu's party to later become the core of the Liberal-Reformist Party.
