Eleven MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) signed a legislative initiative to amend the Constitution’s article concerning the election of the head of state. The bill provides for the election of the President by universal, freely expressed and secret vote, by the people, Liberal-Democratic MP Chiril Lucinschi stated in a press beefing, quoted by IPN.

The lawmaker said that by the amendments made to the Constitution since 2000, a defective constitutional model for electing the President was created. This caused multiple blockages and crises. “The mechanism for electing the head of state is incomplete and can generate political crises in the future,” stated Chiril Lucinschi.

He noted that this initiative appeared following Speaker Andrian Candu’s statements about the parliamentary alliance’s readiness to support the holding of a referendum on the issue. Also, polls show that the largest part of the population is for the direct election of the head of state. There is no need to spend a lot of money on the referendum as the Constitution can be amended by Parliament.

The Lib-Dems call on all the MPs to subscribe to this bill so that there are at least 54 signatures for submitting this initiative to the Constitutional Court, which is to endorse it.
