The USR PLUS Euro-parliamentary delegation transmitted a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the European Council Charles Michel, by which it asks that the European institutions should adopt a policy adjusted to the special situation in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
The letter says the parliamentary elections held last Sunday radically changed the political climate in Chisinau and showed that there is now political and popular will for the Republic of Moldova’s fast and complete adhering to the European principles and values. However, no matter how remarkable this exceptional gesture seems, its materialization cannot take place without a corresponding attitude on the part of the European institutions. The Republic of Moldova needs swift and clear assistance, a predetermined path and well-determined final points on its European path.
The joint letter signed by eight MEPs of the USR PLUS Alliance says that on July 11 the Moldovans chose democracy, the rule of law and a European future for their country, offering a powerful mandate to President Maia Sandu’s Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).
According to the MEPs, first of all the EU should more directly support the complex, but essential justice sector reform. With its profound impact on all the aspects of the social, economic and political life in any democracy, the success of the justice sector reform is a factor of change in all the other approaches that the EU and the Republic of Moldova will adopt together. The MEPs welcome the constitution by President Maia Sandu of a new independent anticorruption consultative committee and support the cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the EU in fighting all types of financial crimes. They believe Commissioners Reynders and Verhely can agree, together with the new government of Moldova, an ambitious action plan for supporting these efforts.
Secondly, the Moldovan citizens should feel the tangible benefits of the European integration. Two concrete results can bring the Union closer to the Moldovans in their daily life, namely: full abolition of roaming charges and Moldova’s inclusion in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
Thirdly, the European Commission and the European Council are asked to increase the assistance provided to the independent mass media and civil society in the Republic of Moldova. They believe the methodology of reviewing the enlargement, structured around integration clusters, can be a good opportunity for extending the European integration perspective of the Republic of Moldova and other countries of the region.
