The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) ordered instituting legal proceedings over arbitrariness in the organization of the referendum in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, IPN reports.

In a communiqué, the PGO says that on November 27, 2013, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia adopted two decisions – Concerning the holding of a legislative referendum on the right of the residents of Gagauzia to external self-determination and Concerning the holding of a consultative referendum. Though afterward these decisions were invalidated by the court, the preparations for the referendum go on.

The prosecutors established that an electoral commission is being set up for organizing and holding the referendum, while the sum needed for the plebiscite was earmarked in the 2014 budget of Gagauzia.

According to prosecutors, by the given acts the provisions of the Constitution, the Election Code and other legal documents are violated.

The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia decided to hold a referendum to find out the opinion of the region’s inhabitants as to what union Moldova should join – the European Union or the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union.
