The leaders of the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth” consider the persons who were arrested as a result of the April 24 protest on suspicion that they took part in public disorder are political prisoners. In a news conference held in the Great National Assembly Square, these noted that the protesters were arrested in a KGB style and their rights were thus flagrantly violated, IPN reports.
One of the leaders of the Platform Vasile Nastase said that no mass disorder happened on April 24. The people did nothing but attract the attention of the development partners to the fact that billions are stolen in Moldova, that the state is captive and the law enforcement agencies do not work. The development partners of Moldova must understand that the arrested protesters are political prisoners.
Platform leader Chiril Motpan noted that the persons to blame for the violation of human rights will answer in accordance with the law. “We are here to support those who were arrested and to transmit an encouragement message to all the people – don’t be afraid as we are together and will be so till the end,” he stated.
The Platform’s vice president Valentin Dolganiuc said the protesters will struggle until real democracy is established in Moldova, while the human rights and fundamental freedoms are respected. “The citizens of the Republic of Moldova tasted the freedom and dignity. Those who tested these will never abandon them and will struggle for them throughout life. That’s why no matter what kind of pressure you exert – physical, psychological, economic or of any other kind – you will not manage to make us kneel down,” he stated.
Attending the event, the deputy head of the Liberal Reformist Party Tatiana Potang said the dissatisfaction of the persons who protested on April 24 is justified. “We do not support violence, but we make common cause with the discontented people. In such conditions, the dissatisfaction is justified, especially given the defying way in which the people are treated by this government. The protests enable us to express our dissatisfaction. We condemn the abuses committed against innocent people,” she stated.
After the April 24 protest mounted by the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth”, the police arrested a man suspected of active participation in public disorder and of injuring a police officer. Four more protesters were arrested on May 6 following searches carried out at their homes.
