Leaders of extraparliamentary parties have dissenting opinions about the introduction of the uninominal voting system and abandonment of party lists. The issue was developed in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

The leader of the People’s Movement’s “Antimafie” Sergiu Mocanu said the replacement of the electoral system is a new strategy of those who are in power, aimed at distracting attention from the problems faced by the country. It is also a tactic to keep power used by the heavyweights of the Democracy Party. “The problem of the Republic of Moldova resides not in the electoral system, but in the political class. Democracy does not mean the voting system only. Democracy represents not only the people’s wish, but also the rule of law, protest, civil society, external commitments. There is a risk that adventurers will enter Parliament by the uninominal voting system. They build palaces covered in marble and have enough money to enter Parliament if the uninominal voting system is introduced,” stated Mocanu.

Alexandru Slusari, one of the leaders of the Platform “Dignity and Truth”, stated that by aiming to introduce the uninominal voting system, the current government wants to keep power. “Plahotniuc knows he risks losing not only power, but also his freedom,” he said.

Alexandru Oleinic, chairman of the People’s Party, stated a different opinion. “We have always pleaded for the introduction of the mixed system. The current political situation requires a change. Polls show the people want this,” he said.
