The Lawyers Union of the Republic of Moldova has announced a protest against the excessive use of preventive detention and holding of persons in inhuman and degrading conditions. The protest will take place in front of the Chisinau Appeals Court on June 26, starting at 10am, IPN reports.
On the protest day, lawyers and lawyers on probation will not take part in hearings on criminal, civil or contraventional lawsuits at the courts of law of all levels throughout the day. The lawyers will also not take part in the investigation activities of the prosecution bodies, if only in proceedings to impose or extend preventive detention, house arrest or judicial control.
In a press release, the Lawyers Union said the protest is a reaction to the perpetuation of the practice of using the arrest during the investigation and trying of cases. The exceptional arrest measure was reduced to a banal formality without the institutions that ask for and apply this justifying the impossibility of imposing non-privative measures of freedom.
