Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who was remanded in custody and is investigated for passive corruption and traffic of influence, continues to be humiliated and subjected to degrading treatment in detention, the politician’s lawyer Igor Popa said in a special edition of the program “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel, IPN reports.
“They cannot hold a former Premier and an MP in a cell where persons convicted of serious crimes are held over the wall. When he goes to take a shower and walks along the corridor, the prisoners shout insults at him. The transfer of Filat to a cell in the basement is also a reason for concern. Moreover, Filat received a letter with indecent words and threats. It’s clear that Filat should not be held in the same conditions as the other detainees, who are not as vulnerable. Both the prosecutors and the administration of Penitentiary No.13 violate Filat’s rights and behave inappropriately,” stated the lawyer.
Igor Popa noted that the prosecutors do not have conclusive evidence to prove Filat’s guilt, while his investigation under arrest represents a serious violation. ”Everything was done based on Ilan Shor’s depositions. I think this was constrained by the prosecutors to make those statements. For his part, Vlad Filat filed a complaint by which he accuses Shor of false depositions. The 20 million lei bribe that Shor said he took to the head office of the PLDM wasn’t found during searches. The prosecutors gave back the laptops and memory sticks seized during the search to Filat’s wife. One of the expensive watches that they said they found in the home of my client was given to him as a present by Dmitri Mevedev, while the other one – by Vladimir Voronin,” he stated.
In the program, Igor Popa demanded that Vlad Filat should be offered security and human detention conditions.
