The cages in all the courtrooms must be unconditionally removed. Also the conditions on detaining the accused persons during the lawsuits must be re-examined. Lawyer Veaceslav Turcan sent an appeal in this respect to the Supreme Justice Court.
According to Turcan, at present in all the courts in Moldova that hear penal cases, the accused persons are detained in cages during the lawsuits. Such an attitude towards the accused persons violates their presumption of innocence.
According to the lawyer, the existence of cages in courtrooms violates the Constitution and the Code on Penal Proceedings.
Veaceslav Turcan told Info-Prim Neo that Moldova was condemned in three cases at the European Court of Human Rights for detaining defendants in cages: “Ilascu and others vs. Moldova”, “Becciev vs. Moldova” and “Sarban vs. Moldova”.
