Lawyer Ilie Rotaru demands that MPs Olesea Stamate should quit as the head of the Parliament’s Legal Commission for Appointments and Immunities.

In a news conference at IPN, Ilie Rotaru said there is evidence that Olesea Stamate is the one who promoted Natalia Moloșag as ombudswoman and this appointment resulted in a scandal. Recently, she managed the new competition to choose candidates for the post of ombudsperson.

Ilie Rotaru noted he decided to take part in this contest as he wanted from this post to unveil the mimicking of the justice sector reform and other witnessed illegalities. He presented all the necessary documents and passed the interview stage. In his opinion, the questions put to him were “primitive”, while the assessment criteria were evasive.

“It was a superficial contest with the result known,” said Ilie Rotaru. According to him, of the two selected candidates, Alexandru Zubco will probably emerge victorious. In 2017, when Vlad Plahotniuc directed Moldova and the whole justice system, Zubco became head of unit and then of department at the Ombudsperson’s Office.

“The judiciary in our country is very independent. They do what they want inside they system. We should speak not about the independence of the justice system in the Republic of Moldova, but about the legality in justice as the situation is very bad here. The legality of justice in Moldova is equal to zero. The judges do what they want in concrete cases, especially in criminal cases, as the prosecutors do,” stated Ilie Rotaru, accusing the ruling party of mimicking the justice sector reform.

He also referred to the strategy for ensuring the independence and integrity of the justice sector for 2022-2025 and the action plan for implementing this. According to Ilie Rotaru, the content of the document was copied from the strategy worked out by “Plahotniuc’s lieutenants” and was endorsed during the government of the Party of Socialists, with passages being added.
