House arrest in the case of the former chief of the General Police Inspectorate Alexandru Pînzari is the most suitable measure that should have been considered by the court of law if taking into account the prosecutors’ suspicion that Alexandru Pînzari can take measures to avoid the investigation body or can come into contact with other persons investigated in this case, lawyer Ruslan Dodica stated in a news conference at IPN.

According to the lawyer, remand detention is an exceptional measure, but this exceptional measure becomes a rule. The personality, post, merits of the person are not taken into account. It is the weight of the evidence provided by the prosecution that has a say. “In the case of Alexandru Pînzari, most of the reasons based on which remand detention was decided were characteristics given by the investigation body itself. These are subjective, not objective, given the gravity of the charges formulated by the investigation body,” said Ruslan Dodica, noting an objective description can be given by friends, mates of Alexandru Pînzari.

He noted that the Chisinau City Appeals Court today will examine the appeal filed by the defense and he is hopeful that the court will take into account reasons that justify the risks posed by his client or that can hamper the investigation.

According to Ruslan Dodica, the deed that the investigation body describes as offense is rather a juridical problem. Many specialists from justice can assess the deeds with which Alexandru Pînzari was charged as correct and legal actions that are within the remit of the head of the General Police Inspectorate.

“Judging by these investigations and the easily adopted decisions on house arrest, we can say that it is dangerous to bear a name, it is dangerous to form part of a particulars company and it is dangerous to be the member of a nongovernmental organization or party that was earlier in power.”

Members and supporters of the Democratic Party mounted a demonstration in support of Alexandru Pînzari at the Chisinau City Appeals Court today, starting at 1pm.
