The legislative body on May 24 adopted again the Law on Chemical Castration of Pedophiles so that the head of state can no longer use his right of veto to block the bill, Info-Prim Neo reports. Liberal lawmaker Victor Popa, who heads the legal commission for appointments and immunities, said that the bill underwent no changes as the President did not formulate proposals or objections to it. Thus, the MPs passed the bill in the same form. The bill on the chemical castration of pedophiles was put forward by the Liberal Party. It was passed by Parliament in two readings at the start of March and was to take effect on July 1. But the head of state did not promulgate the law, arguing it promotes inhuman treatment, going thus against the constitutional provisions on degrading treatment. The chemical castration consists in the administration of a special drug that inhibits the libido. The law envisages the obligatory castration of persons who raped children under 14, while in cases involving older children, depending on the gravity of the case and the consequences.
