MEP Monica Macovei, who is the co-chairwoman of the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee, said the recent adoption by the Transnistrian administration of the so-called legal act on its border creates new military and administrative barriers and can amplify the region’s self-isolation. The statement was made in the Committee’s meeting that was held in Brussels on June 17-18, IPN reports.

Monica Macovei expressed her concern about the difficulties faced by the eight Moldovan-administered Latin-script Transnistrian schools. “The schools continue to be discriminated and do not benefit from equitable status, recognized by the Transnistrian authorities,” she stated.

In another development, the MEP welcomed the investiture of a new, pro-European Government in Chisinau and urged continuing the reforms aimed at strengthening democracy and the impartial and efficient functioning of the state institutions, in particular the judicial and anti-corruption institutions.

At the end of the meeting, Monica Macovei invited the heads of state and government that will take part in the Eastern Partnership Summit of this November to reassert the support for Moldova’s European aspirations.
