Libraries in 200 localities, which asked for the renewal of book stocks, will receive almost 100,000 volumes in physical format and as many in digital format from Romania. The books are purchased by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania. The donation ceremony will take place in the Great National Assembly Square on Thursday, October 10, at 1:00 p.m., IPN reports.

It is the largest cultural project carried out in the last 30 years by Romania in the Republic of Moldova, with the aim of affirming and developing the Romanian ethnic, cultural and linguistic identity, but also of contributing to the formation of the new generation in the Republic of Moldova, said the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova.

Following a request made by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova and as a result of discussions with Romania’s Embassy in Chisinau, the need to renew the book stocks of public libraries in Moldova was signaled. Representatives of the Library said that the lack of new books in Romanian is a major problem, most of the textbooks being old and damaged. “The citizens of the Republic of Moldova are interested in books in Romanian, and the new books will encourage reading among young people and adults."

“The promotion and cultivation of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova are a priority for the Department and I am glad that we managed to allocate a budget of approximately 4 million RON for the purchase of valuable books, written in Romanian, of classic and contemporary authors, Romanian and foreign,” said the Department’s secretary of state Adrian Dupu.

Launched in April, the project “Books in Romanian for Libraries of the Republic of Moldova” finally reaches the stage of donation to the National Library of the Republic of Moldova. This institution is to distribute the volumes, in the shortest time, to public libraries in 200 localities.
