The head of the National Public Association “Consumer Protection” Piotr Guțul said that Moldtelecom illegally increased the landline calling rates for all consumers in the Republic of Moldova.

In a news conference hosted by IPN, Piotr Guțul said that in January this year, Moldtelecom increased the landline call charge from 6 to 40 lei. “We initiated an investigation and came to the conclusion that Moldtelecom violated the Law on Consumer Protection. The company did not have the right to increase the charge unilaterally, without the consumer’s consent,” stated the head of “Consumer Protection”.

In connection with this, the association submitted a petition to the interim prosecutor general in February. An answer came, but no investigations were carried out. Being convinced that the operator falsified the agreements with consumers, he made another request to the prosecutor general, asking to initiate criminal proceedings.

“Yesterday I received an answer from the Prosecutor General’s Office. This is the answer. The request is addressed to the police chief of Chisinau city in order to start criminal proceedings against the director general of Moldtelecom for the violation of the Law on Consumer Protection,” said Piotr Guțul.

In another development, the leader of the association said that the courts refuse to examine administrative complaints to protect consumers’ rights. They are required to pay the state tax and translate all the documents into Romanian. But the law exempts consumers from the state tax when they go to court.

The head of the National Public Association “Consumer Protection” called on the citizens whose rights are violated to call him, specifying that the phone numbers changed. Thus, consumers can contact him on the phone numbers: 079956600 and 076610350.
