Representatives of the animal protection organization “Laica” accuse the local authorities of further permitting catching dogs on the territory of the municipal necropolis and criticize the stray dogs sterilization project implemented by the Chisinau City Hall and an Austrian company, Info-Prim Neo reports. Christa Schachtl, the founder of the animal protection organization “Laica”, told a news conference on Friday that only recently they managed to set free 112 dogs from the necropolis. The dogs isolated there are not aggressive and do not pose a threat. On the contrary, they are docile and therefore easy to catch. Among the animals identified at the necropolis was a dog whose owner found him later at the shelter for animals “Laica”, Christa Schachtl said. According to the director of “Laica” Tatiana Manastarli, who is also a veterinary doctor, the stray dogs sterilization project will not have an effect because it is too short and the neutering procedures are not fully observed. “It is a sterilization program that will have a zero effect because we need at least 4-5 years to solve the problem of stray dogs. After sterilization, the dogs are looked after 24 hours and this is not enough. The treatment must last for at least 3-4 days,” Tatiana Manastarli said. Christa Schachtl said that she purchased a house and transformed it into a shelter for animals, but she needs more money to look after them. Mihai Moldovanu, the head of the Health Division, has told Info-Prim Neo that until the initiation of the sterilization process, the catching of dogs is banned. The dogs that are at the necropolis at present have been caught earlier. ”The issue of stray dogs will not be dropped when the Austrian program is completed. A specialized service will be created at “Autosalubritate” division in the future to neuter stray dogs. There will be identified a plot of land where to build a shelter for stray dogs to continue their sterilization,” Mihai Moldovan said. Under the contract for neutering stray dogs, the Austrian foundation Vier Pfoten International will cover the costs of disinfection, vaccination and sterilization of about 35 stray dogs in Chisinau a day. The project starts on March 23 and will last for 6 – 8 weeks. The mobile clinic will be set up on the territory of the Zoological Garden in Chisinau.
