The low temperatures this May are due to La Niña, which happens once in every few years. The currents coming from the Arctic later form cyclones in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and these cross the European continent, including the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
Contacted by IPN for details, Gennady Roșca, head of the Forecasts Division of the State Hydrometeorological Service, said the La Niña phenomenon occurs once in three years on average. The last time this phenomenon was felt in Moldova in 2017.
“The territory of the Republic of Moldova is crossed by a number of cyclones coming from the Atlantic Ocean, which are heading for the European continent. As these cyclones are going through the Republic of Moldova, nebulosity increases, we have precipitation with thunder and lightning, in parts with hail, and air temperatures decrease,” explained the specialist.
In general, air temperatures in May are within the norms for this period or slightly lower. “During the last three years, the temperatures in spring were by 2-3 agrees lower than the norm for this period. This is the so-called phenomenon El Niño. Moldova’s territory was crossed primarily by atmospheric fronts coming from North Africa. The few cyclones that appeared in the Atlantic Ocean crossed only the north of the European continent and didn’t reach the Republic of Moldova,” said Gennady Roșca.
The temperatures until end-May will not exceed 25degrees Celsius. Rain with thunder and lightning was forecast for May 17.
“In June, temperatures will rise to 30 degrees Celsius, but the days with such values will not prevail as they did during the past two years. June is the month with the heaviest precipitation and atmospheric instability with rain accompanied by thunder and lightning and by hail is expected during the first month of spring. In July and August, it will be hot, with temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius. On some of the days, the temperatures can cross the normal limits for this period of the year,” stated the forecaster.
