The President of Romania Klaus Iohannis called on the European Union to urgently identity concrete actions for bringing the current political crisis in the Republic of Moldovan to an end by a solution negotiated based on the values and principles of the EU. The call was formulated in a letter addressed by Klaus Iohannis to the President of the European Council Donald Tusk and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, IPN reports.
The letter says that Romania, as a member state of the European Union that has a special relationship with the Republic of Moldova based on the Strategic Partnership for the European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, and with which it shares a common language, history and culture is concerned about the developments in Chisinau.
According to President Iohannis, the Republic of Moldova faces a serious constitutional and political crisis that poses threats to its stability.
“Moreover, I’m convinced that you know that a crisis in the immediate vicinity of Romania and the European Union is a significant challenge to the regional stability and security that the European Union and its member states cannot ignore,” runs the letter.
Klaus Iohannis also said the European Union, in accordance with the commitments it assumed towards the Republic of Moldova through the European Neighborhood Policy and the EU Global Strategy, should rise to the level of expectations of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. For its part, Romania is ready to support these efforts in full compliance with its objective to back Moldova’s European course.
