Moldova took important steps towards integration into the EU, impressing Europe by its determination. Even more important results will be expected from it over the next few years and Romania will be near Moldova in all these Europeanization efforts, the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis said when delivering a speech at the State University of Moldova. “I’m convinced that in a reasonable period of time, the Prut will remain only a geographic border, while Moldova will be an important and serious member of the European Union. This way Europe’s gate will be moved the distance of one more step,” stated the Romanian official, quoted by IPN.

Klaus Iohannis said that Moldova has a great chance to join the EU and this chance is called Romania, which is the most reputable supporter of Moldova in its European integration efforts. “For us, Moldova’s road to the United Europe is a national priority. We now have the idea of European support for Chisinau. I underline my firm commitment for these approaches, based on the prerogatives of the post I hold,” he stated.

Klaus Iohannis noted that the commitment to build a sustainable future must be undertaken by the Government of Moldova, regardless of its composition. The implementation of the initiated democratic reforms will be one of the greatest challenges of the next few years. There is no other way towards prosperity and security than by continuing this concerted effort, while Romania will express its solidarity through the experience it gained in this respect.

The official also said that the support provided to Moldova is not only institutional as the economic, cultural and political relations are also developed. “One cannot build something durable without political stability and consensus, without a major project assumed by decision -makers of the state. The institutions function and produce results only when there is calmness, perseverance and sufficient will for succeeding,” stated Klaus Iohannis.

He noted that Romania signed the Association Agreement with the European Union in 1993 and became a fully-fledged member of the EU in 14 years. The experience showed that expectancy means overcoming of the own barriers in administration, justice, the state’s relations with the people. “As a final point, the accession to the EU means assumption of principles and values that make life better. Romania wants the people of Moldova to enjoy the benefits that Europe can bring to each of them as soon as possible. I mean economic support, assistance programs and financing lines,” said the Romanian President.

Klaus Iohannis paid a two-day visit to Chisinau. He met with President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici, Parliamentary Speaker Andrian Candu and with the leaders of the three pro-European parties.
