Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis said that he didn’t cancel the visit to Chisinau, but only put it off until after the installation of the new government, reported the Romanians news website realitatea.net, quoted by IPN.

“I didn’t cancel the visit. Together with President Timofti, we decided to postpone the visit, not to cancel it. The state visit was put off because it looked inopportune to us given that the Moldovan parties were holding talks to form the government. This period is difficult from political viewpoint. I didn’t want to cause useless additional pressure or to give signs that could have been misinterpreted. Thus, together with President Timofti, we decided to postpone the visit until after the formation and installation of the new government,” Klaus Iohannis explained.

The Romanian head of state also said that the relations between Romania and Moldova are very special and unique in Europe and the whole world. “These relations derive from the common history, common language and common culture. On the other hand, we must be conscious that these special relations represent not only statements that we want to do and do things together, but also a great responsibility for Romania. I think that Romania must feel responsible for helping Moldova cover its path to Europe. And we will help it,” he stated.

Klaus Iohannis also said that the parliamentary elections held in Moldova last November showed that the people want a European future and thus the government that will be formed should be a pro-European one.

The official visit to Moldova by the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis was to take place on January 22 and 23.
