The Special Representative of the European Union for Moldova in 2007-2011 Kalman Mizsei considers that when somebody comes to power, it is harder for this to fulfill the made promises. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, he said the President in Moldova does not take part in economic governance much and slogans that not necessarily can be put into practice are used in the election campaign. In the future, it will be evident how the elected President acts, IPN reports.

As to the electoral slogans used by Igor Dodon, Kalman Mizsei said some of these were specially tailored for the Russian audience and for the Kremlin, like that about the federalization of Moldova and, especially, the statement about the annexation of Crimea, which was very unsuitable.

According to him, the European values were represented consistently by Maia Sandu. Kalman Mizsei said he has never seen in Moldova a politician like her, with such powerful values and so much courage. He noted it is one thing to declare yourself pro-West and it is another thing to live according to the European values and the problem during the last six years was that the governments raised the European flag above, but didn’t respect the EU values.

Asked what role the President could play in settling the Transnistrian dispute, Kalman Mizsei said there are several important things that must be followed. According to him, Russia uses the Transnistrian region as a hook by which to keep Moldova in its area of interest. “And we know this from the Kozak Memorandum of 2003, which promoted the principle of federalization pronounced now by Mister Dodon. It is important for Moldova to pragmatically negotiate the Transnistrian issue, focusing on the measures to build confidence between the two sides of the Nistru. But this should be done in a very principled way, promoting the own interest of the power in Chisinau,” stated the official.

As regards other priorities of the President, Kalman Mizsei said he wants to see how the whole society expects an active promotion of those reforms that are expected by the EU too, which are clean government, really independent justice and independent prosecution service, not what there is now.
