Some of the jurists criticize the way in which suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo was arrested, saying the procedures weren’t respected and the scenario was most probably planned beforehand so as to provide a televised show to society.

Jurist Nicolae Eșanu believes the Superior Council of Prosecutors’ decision to assign a prosecutor to examine MP Lilian Carp’s complaint and to then arrest Stoianoglo was arranged in advance.

“In the justice sector, the way in which they act is very important. The applied methods are catastrophic. The legislation stipulates a special mechanism for holding the Prosecutor General accountable – the designated prosecutor needs to thoroughly examine the case. Only two hours passed since the SCP gave its consent and announced the criminal proceedings. We have the feeling that the name of the prosecutor who was to be assigned was known beforehand. The materials examined by prosecutor Furtună also generate suspicions. It seems that they planned everything and only staged a theater play,” Nicolae Eșanu stated in the talk show “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel.

Constitutional law expert Teodor Cârnaț said the procedure for arresting the suspended Prosecutor General was unlawful and discredits the idea of the fight against corruption.

“The scenario was coordinated with those from the SIS, with some of the members of the SCP and we were witnesses to the arrester of a Prosecutor General based on four counts. Such a procedure goes against the human rights, the values of the rule of law and dignity. Stoianoglo could have been the most notorious criminal, but he should have been offered the possibility of defending himself, of stating his viewpoint at the SCP’s meeting,” stated Teodor Cârnaț.

The suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo was placed under arrest for 72 hours. Yesterday, the prosecutor in charge of the case Victor Furtună asked for 30 days’ arrest for Stoianoglo. The request is to be examined by the Ciocana Court today.
