July 7 referendum in Lebedenco declared invalid

The mayor of Lebedenco village of Cahul district Tatiana Pinti wasn’t dismissed from the post as a result of the local referendum held on July 7. According to a communiqué from the Central Election Commission, 516 persons of the 1,958 written in the electoral rolls took part in the referendum, which is 1/3 of the voters, IPN reports.

Under the Election Code, a local referendum is considered invalid if less than 1/3 of the voters written in the electoral registers take part in it. As many as 454 people voted in favor, while 58 against.

In the local general elections of June 5, 2011, Tatiana Pinti was elected mayor of Lebedenco in the second round by 469 votes.

The referendum was organized by a group of local councilors, who argued that the mayor does not fulfill her duties.
