The Moldovan Judo Federation held elections again. Businessman Ion Vinaga, who was elected president a month ago, tendered his resignation. Andrei Golban was chosen in his place on March 13, IPN reports.
Andrei Golban is 40. He represented Moldova at the 1996 Olympic Games. Two years later he won silver at the European Championship in Spain. “Most of the medals were earlier won by athletes from provinces. Now this tradition was lost. To build Moldova’s Olympic squad, we must now select candidates and train them since they are children,” said the new president Andrei Golban.
Businessman Ion Vinaga promised he will continue to support financially the judokas. “I resigned because I want to focus on the business. I often travel abroad. If I stay only in the country, I will not have money for the judokas,” he stated.
Andrei Golban was voted by 34 of the 35 delegates. He will hold office for four years.
