The Superior Council of Magistracy allowed taking legal action and holding accountable a judge from Drochia following an approach made by Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen. It was established that last December, the woman judge rejected the prosecutor’s request to extend the remand detention for a person accused of illegally dispossessing a woman of house. This person later left Moldova, IPN reports.

In a press release, the Prosecutor General’s Office says the judge of inquiry took such a decision even if the prosecutor presented the copy of the order to start other criminal cases over similar offenses against the accused and his accomplices. Even if this wasn’t her duty, the judge ruled that the suspect’s acts do not contain evident elements of an offense. The conclusions were based only on the statements of a witness who was unjustifiably questioned in the hearing. In several days, the Chisinau Appeals Court admitted the prosecutor’s request and quashed the judge’s decision, extending the remand detention for the person. However, this managed to flee Moldova in the period.

The judge faces three to seven years in jail and ban on holding particular posts or performing particular activities for a period of up to five years.
