The former president of the Bălți Appeals Court Alexandru Gheorghieș, who is investigated for unjust enrichment, leaves the system. The judge’s resignation was accepted by the Superior Council of Magistracy on March 22, in the absence of Gheorghieș. A copy of this will be transmitted to President Maia Sandu, IPN reports.
Judge Alexandru Gheorghieș was arrested on unjust enrichment charges on November 16, 2021. Money whose origin the judge could not justify was found as a result of searches in his office and home.
Contacted by IPN for details, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office Mariana Cherpec said that the judge was placed under judicial control for a 30-day period on March 11. The investigation continues, but is to be completed soon. The case also features four accomplices of the judge.
On March 18, the Superior Council of Magistracy accepted the resignation of Vladislav Clima, the president of the Chisinau Appeal Court, who also decided to leave the system. Also then, the Council accepted the resignations of Sergiu Bularu, Tudor Berdilă and Ion Cazacu.
