The Republic of Moldova cannot endlessly remain an agrarian country. To prosper, it must diversify its economy and thus must implement reforms, ex-President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said in an interview for the TV channel “Publika TV”, IPN reports.
Jose Manuel Barroso said that Moldova must do reforms to attract foreign investors. “The signing of an accord with the IMF is a credibility problem for the Republic of Moldova. I hope that this document will be signed as soon as possible. It is necessary to pursue the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU. If credibility is ensured, investors will come. These will orient to the area where to invest, either tourism, service provision or something else,” he stated.
The European official noted three areas where reforms must be done so as to ensure the development of the business sector. “The rule of law, infrastructure and reformation of the education system must be ensured. These are conditions for developing the economy and thus for ensuring the country’s prosperity. A modern economy must be open, both inside and outside,” he said.
Jose Manuel Barroso said the economic crisis that affected some of the states of the region must not represent an obstacle to doing reforms in the Republic of Moldova. “It is evident that the crisis that affected some of the countries of the region directly affects the Republic of Moldova. But this cannot prevent you from doing reforms, from ensuring the rule of law, which is a condition for attracting investors,” he stated.
Jose Manuel Barroso came to Moldova to take part in the Economic Forum “Republic of Moldova in the New Regional Context” that was staged by the Moldova Business People Association on May 25.
