On the occasion of the visit paid by the President of Italy Sergio Mattarella to Chisinau, a Joint Declaration in Support of Moldova’s Accession to the European Union was signed. The document states that the enlargement of the EU is an investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity, and Italy recognizes Moldova’s growing contribution to regional and European security, IPN reports.

The declaration was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimov and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic Edmondo Cirielli. The signatories reaffirm their firm commitment to the common values and principles that unite the Republic of Moldova and Italy – democracy, human rights, the rule of law, peace and prosperity for all citizens.

The declaration shows that the Republic of Moldova has taken significant steps on its European path, including the full implementation of the nine recommendations put forward by the European Commission, and made progress in implementing the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) with the European Union. According to the signatories, these efforts demonstrate the determination and political will of the Republic of Moldova to align with European standards and values.

“The enlargement of the European Union is an investment in peace, security, stability and prosperity. It is a merit-based approach. Moldova is pursuing an accelerated reform agenda, recognizing the importance of moving quickly in the current geopolitical context. Italy fully supports Moldova’s accession to the European Union, which will contribute to the stability, security and prosperity of the entire European continent. We are confident that Moldova’s integration into the EU will bring mutual benefits, stimulating economic growth, cultural exchanges and stronger political cooperation,” reads the declaration.

Italy recognizes the significant contribution made by the Republic of Moldova to regional and European security. “We are committed to extending our bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, energy, security, education and cultural exchanges, further strengthening the ties between our peoples. We also want to emphasize the significant role of the Moldovan community in Italy, which serves as a bridge between our countries. Their hard work contributes to both economies, while promoting mutual understanding and lasting ties,” states the declaration.

The signatories express their hope that the Republic of Moldova’s path towards the EU will be marked by continuous progress and fruitful cooperation between Italy and Moldova.
