The Joint Control Commission (JCC) does not have the ability to ensure peace in the Security Zone, considers the National Union of Independence War Veterans. Members of the organization say the Commission did not take all the measures possible to set free the mayor of Corjova and a local councilor who were arrested by the Transnistrian militia on March 2, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference, the Union's head Eduard Maican said that he questions the need of such a commission that proved unable to ensure peace in the region. “The Union doubts the capacities of the mediators and the work of the sides involved in the conflict settlement process. Their inactivity indirectly stimulates the Transnistrian regime to prepare other provocative actions,” Eduard Maican said. According to him, the members of the JCC did not take measures to counteract the criminal acts of the separatist regime that grow in number year by year. The Transnistrians are terrorized by the secessionist forces that open criminal cases again them. Eduard Maican said the Moldovan constitutional authorities should take immediate measures to protect the citizens from the criminal acts of the unconstitutional regime. Mayor of Corjova Valeriu Mitul told the conference that all those who violate the rights of the Transnistrians should be held accountable. He said that the arrests are aimed at appropriating the territory. “We will not surrender. If the Moldovan authorities do nothing, we will think how to defend our village from separatists and intruders,” said Valeriu Mitul. Corjova councilman Iurie Cotofan said activities to commemorate those who died in the 1992 war were organized earlier too, but this year they were out of the ordinary. “This event inconvenienced somebody this year, probably owing to the presidential elections in Transnistria. There are persons who want to show who controls the region,” he stated. He also said that the unconstitutional authorities want to appropriate that land by different methods, including by manipulating the people. “The people in Transnistria retire two years earlier than on the right bank of the Nistru. If the Moldovan administration does nothing to help the Transnistrians, we will gradually lose what we have,” said the councilor. Valeriu Mitul and Iurie Cotofan were arrested during festivities held to remember those who died in the 1992 war for the country's independence and territorial integrity. They were accused of antistate actions on the territory of the 'Moldovan Transnistrian republic'. Corjova is situated on the left bank of the Nistru, but is controlled by the Moldovan constitutional authorities. The two officials were released under the pressure exerted by the Moldovan authorities and the international community.
