Jail terms to be introduced for cruelty to animals

The Cabinet approved changes to the Penal Code by which punishment is instituted for acts of hooliganism committed on the territory or inside health facilities. The penalty is a fine of up to 67,000 lei or up to five years in jail, IPN reports.

Other changes made to the Penal Code introduce penalties for the promotion of suicide, including through social networking sites. The persons who will distribute messages in support of suicide acts will be punished with up to 240 hours of community service or even up to four years in jail.

Also, the persons who violate the intellectual property rights will be freed from liability if they contribute to discovering offenses and will repair the caused damage.

The business entities that will cooperate with the employees of the Competition Council in identifying cases of violation of the competition rules will be freed from criminal punishment.

The persons who will torture or show cruelty to animals will be punished with a fine of up to 37,000 lei, 100 to 180 hours of community service or up to one year in jail. Currently, animal cruelty is punished only with a fine, of up to 3,600 lei.
