Iurie Roșca was sentenced to six years in prison for influence peddling. The former deputy prime minister and deputy speaker of Parliament in two legislatures was found guilty of requesting €1 million from the administrator of a company to influence the president of the Supreme Court of Justice. The sentence was pronounced by the Buiucani Court of Chisinau City. Until it becomes final, Iurie Rosca cannot to leave the country, IPN reports.

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said that the criminal investigation was initiated in March 2017, based on a complaint. In December 2009, the defendant, holding the position of deputy prime minister, asked for €1 million from the administrator of a company, promising that he will influence the president of the Supreme Court of Justice to ensure the acceptance of the appeal filed by the denouncer against the decision of the Economic Court of Appeals.

In December 2009 and March 2011, the defendant received from the denouncer two installments of the requested amount, respectively, US$117,000 and US$110,000 (in total, the equivalent of over 2.7 million lei).

The criminal investigation lasted for one year and three months, while the trial of the case lasted for more than five years, being examined according to a general procedure. The defendant denied any wrongdoing.

Today the court found the defendant guilty of influence trafficking, sentencing him to six years in a semi-closed penitentiary.

Until the sentence becomes final, Iurie Rosca cannot leave the country. The court also ordered to confiscate from the convict, for the benefit of the state, the amount of US$27,000, converted into national currency according to the exchange rate on the date of execution of the sentence, the seizure applied to his assets being maintained.

The sentence can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeals within 15 days.
