Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said that he and his governmental team have political will to remove corruption. Otherwise, neither he nor his colleagues would have become involved in governance. The Premier made the statements in the program “Replica” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.
“The executive’s actions enable the Europeans to have a dose of confidence. A number of commissioners underlined that nobody surpassed us as regards the reform implementation pace for the time being. There is will to fight corruption. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have become involved in governance. I want the competent institutions to do their job,“ said Iurie Leanca.
He stressed that it is in the Moldovans’ interest to be monitored by the EU, which invested a lot in the country. “The fact that the European officials resume the visits means something. These visits will have definite weight,” stated the Premier.
Leonid Litra, senior researcher at the Institute of World Policy in Kiev, said that even if the Prime Minister agreed the partial initialing of the Association Agreement with the EU in Brussels, problems can appear because of the fight against corruption. “Not many persons were tried for corruption over the last three years and a half. The problem is that we didn’t manage to show will in the fight against corruption, mainly at high level,” he stated.
Doru Petruti, director of the Marketing and Polling Institute IMAS-INC Chisinau, said the Premier pursues a gradual policy and the great expectations are one of the risks that he wants to avoid. As to corruption, Petruti considers that there is twice more corruption at high level. “I welcome the fact that the Prime Minister is forming a team and he should take into account everyone’s merits in this process,” he said.
Last weekend, Iurie Leanca paid a working visit to Brussels. On his return, he said that the EU is as open to Moldova as earlier and that several European commissioners will visit the country in autumn, before the Vilnius Summit.
