Prime Minister Iurie Leanca calls on the MPs to support the amendments proposed by the Government to the anti-tobacco policies in order to reduce the negative effects of smoking on health, IPN reports.
The appeal was made in a thematic conference titled “Dialogue on tobacco control policies” that was held in Chisinau on February 18. The Premier voiced hope that the proposed amendments will be passed by Parliament within three months.
Attending the event, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici expressed her conviction that all the MPs will vote for the given amendments as it is a matter concerning the people’s health. “We must make a common front so as to prevent the negative effects of smoking and use of alcohol on young people and children,” she stated.
World Health Organization program manager Kristina Mauer-Stender said that Moldova is among the few countries that took definite measures in the fight against tobacco use, with the involvement of the government, civil society and ordinary people.
On December 17, 2013, the Government adopted a series of amendments to the anti-tobacco legislation. Smoking in closed and semi-closed public places, at the workplace and in public transport is banned. The owners and managers of these places will be obliged to put the symbol showing that smoking is banned on the entrance door.
