Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Iurie Leancă, president of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM), said the slap given by the PLDM and PL to the European integration on October 18 will be harshly penalized by the citizens. Owing to the vainglory and frustrations of small leaders, the chance of ensuring the irreversibility of Moldova’s European course was missed, IPN reports.
In a press release, the PPEM says the Liberal and Liberal-Democratic MPs, even if they provided many ‘arguments’ to have an excuse, forgot that only the European road that deserves to be enshrined in the Constitution can lead Moldova to the accomplishment of these shared ideals and values.
The leader of the PPEM noted that the party he leads will be from now on more committed than ever to defending and promoting the European integration cause of the Republic of Moldova. “No Socialist, Communist, Liberal or Liberal-Democrat should ever enjoy the chances of opposing the European integration,” stated Iurie Leancă.
The vote for the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and enshrine the European integration objective in it failed. The MPs of the Liberal Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, the Party of Socialists and the Party of Communists didn’t support the bill. The initiative garnered only 54 votes in favor and wasn’t thus adopted. A constitutional initiative is carried by the votes of 67 MPs. Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the Democratic Party is considering the possibility of holding a referendum on the enshrining of the European integration in the Constitution. The plebiscite could take place simultaneously with the parliamentary elections.
