The referendums in Gagauzia are held for the sake of speculation, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said in the program “Good Evening” on the national TV channel Moldova 1.

“It’s clear that those from Comrat exceeded their powers. It’s not a referendum. They want rather a survey on a subject where the speculation capacity is, unfortunately, rather great,” said the Premier.

Iurie Leanca believes that a part of the blame is borne by the central authorities as the Romanian language is not spoken enough either in Gagauzia or in Taraclia district. Therefore, access to information is limited and the people inform themselves from other resources, usually speculative.

The official also referred to forces that try to stimulate the participation of people in the referendums, mentioning the destructive role of the Communist Party in this respect. “This party’s efforts are aimed at destabilizing the situation in Moldova, including by encouraging separatism. It is regrettable that a party resorts to such gestures. I hope the people will punish them if not now, then in elections,” stated the Premier.

Last November, the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia decided to hold a legislative referendum on the Gagauz people’s right to self-determination and a consultative referendum with two questions: on Moldova joining the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union and on Moldova joining the European Union. The Comrat Court annulled the given decisions. However, in an extraordinary session on January 31, the People’s Assembly confirmed its vote in favor of holding the two referendums on February 2.
