“The Republic of Moldova is an example for the states with European aspirations, especially because it chose the path to the West and simultaneously wants to keep the goods relations with the East,” Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini, who will take up the post of EU foreign affairs chief on November 1, said while in Chisinau. The official underlined that this is her first visit abroad after her designation as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, IPN reports.
According to the Government’s press service, in a meeting with the Italian official, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca congratulated her on her appointment as the EU’s foreign policy chief and wished her success. “Everything that is taking place in the EU is important for the countries situated in its neighbor, including Moldova. We have common Latin origins that draw us closer,” he stated.
The two officials discussed the activity of the community of Moldovans settled in Italy. Iurie Leanca spoke about the necessity of signing a bilateral social protection agreement. Other subjects for discussion included the European agenda of Moldova, implementation of reforms, attraction of foreign assistance for the justice sector reform, Moldova’s efforts to diversify the sources of energy and the situation in the region.
Federica Mogherini arrived in Moldova on August 31, only one day after being appointed as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, instead of Catherine Ashton. On December 1 this year, the post of President of the Council of European Union will be occupied by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who will succeed Herman Van Rompuy.
