The leader of the European People’s Party of Moldova (PPEM) Iurie Leancă, who runs in the European Parliament elections on behalf of the “Pro Romania” Party, said that if he is elected MEP, he will insist that the EU should not ignore the democratic backsliding in Moldova if such is witnessed and will plead for the EU’s greater involvement in everything Moldova means in the European Union, IPN reports.

“Besides what I will do for Romania, an important part of my mandate will be devoted to the re-inclusion of the Republic of Moldova in the European Union’s agenda by generating support for what the European perspective of Moldova means, by trying to change the current regulations of the European Union and by offering access to the EU pre-accession funds. Only by such funds we can powerfully stimulate the economic and social processes in the Republic of Moldova,” Iurie Leancă told a news conference. He noted he will insists on the EU’s greater involvement in the justice sector reform because justice will not be restored without such involvement.

Iurie Leancă is the only Moldovan politician who runs in the EP elections on the ticket of a Romanian party. According to him, the leader of the “Pro Romania” Party Victor Ponta came not only with statements, but also with concrete joints projects with Chisinau. He mentioned the Iași-Ungheni gas pipeline, renovated kindergartens, the SMURD service that crossed the Prut and different cultural projects.

The politician voiced hope that the Romanian citizens in Moldova, those who regained the nationality and are outside the country, will go out to vote after seeing what Victor Ponta’s team did for all the citizens and what this team intends to do in the future.

Moldova’s ex-Premier Iurie Leancă runs on the fourth spot out of 33 candidates on the list of the “Pro Romania” Party. The EP elections are held on May 26.
